Dr Birkett’s research uses network and quantitative methodologies to understand the social contextual influence of prejudice on adolescent health and well-being, and in particular, the health of LGBT adolescents. She has also served as an investigator and PI on multiple NIH studies related to HIV. Currently Dr Birkett has a Career Development Award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) focused on understanding network, multilevel, and contextual influences on racial disparities in HIV within young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Additionally, along with Dr Noshir Contractor, she serves as a Co-I and a co-lead of the network science core of the NIDA U01 Project, RADAR. This project uses innovative data capture techniques to collect the longitudinal observations of the sexual, drug, and support networks of YMSM to understand drivers of HIV.
