Dr Stillman is a clinical psychologist with over 20 years experience in tobacco control. She has published over 50 articles in more than 20 different journals. Her primary research focus has been on designing, implementing and evaluating tobacco control and smoking cessation programs. She directed the implementation and evaluation of the project to create a Smoke-Free Johns Hopkins Hospital. Johns Hopkins Hospital was one of the first hospitals in the US to go smoke-free and served as a model for other hospitals across the US. Dr. Stillman has extensive experience working in tobacco control at the local, state, national, and international levels. She is also an expert in both qualitative and quantitative evaluation methodologies. Dr. Stillman has also been involved with community participatory research and mobilization projects and has conducted and evaluated clinical trials of smoking cessation efforts.
While at the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Stillman directed the evaluation of the largest federally funded tobacco control effort entitled, “The American Stop Smoking Intervention Study (ASSIST)”. She was responsible for developing the conceptual framework that guided this large-scale effort. The evaluation compared changes in adult smoking prevalence, per capita cigarette consumption and tobacco control policies in the 17 ASSIST states with the 33 non-ASSIST states and Washington, DC.
Dr Stillman is currently the Co-Director of the Institute for Global Tobacco Control, a responsibility she shares with Dr. Jon Samet. She is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Currently, the Institute receives funding from many different funding sources, including the federal government, private foundations, professional associations and private industry. The Institute has ongoing research projects in approximately 20 countries around the world.
Dr Stillman is also actively involved in curriculum development and teaching. She was responsible for developing the first course dedicated to tobacco control at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. With funding from the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Stillman has worked to launch the Global Tobacco Research Network (tobaccoresearch.net).
