He took a faculty position at the University of Arizona in 1991.  While in Arizona, his research interests in Arizona were nicotine behavioral pharmacology, tobacco cessation, and the translation of clinical smoking cessation research into community practice - including the creation of the Arizona Smokers Helpline.
In 2000, Dr. Leischow was recruited to become Chief of the Tobacco Control Research Branch at the National Cancer Institute (NCI).  He was regularly asked to represent both NCI and NIH on tobacco control matters, including testifying before Congress on tobacco harm reduction.  Dr. Leischow also developed and led an effort at NCI which focused on systems thinking, network analysis and knowledge management approaches to improve public health.  Because of his leadership role bridging research to policy at NCI, Dr. Leischow went on detail from the National Cancer Institute to the Office of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and served in the role of Senior Advisor for Tobacco Policy

In 2005, Dr. Leischow returned to the University of Arizona, where he is Professor in the Colleges of Medicine and Public Health and Associate Director for Behavioral and Social Sciences Research at the Arizona Cancer Center.

Dr. Leischow’s current research interests focus on improving the treatment of tobacco dependence, and analysis of social networks to better understand how to improve tobacco control and public health.  He is also the President of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco.
